Summary
Arter Dale, commonly recorded as Arthur Dale in historical records, was born around 1776 to a mixed Native American and Caucasian family in Campbell County, Virginia. His parents, John Dale Sr and Martha, are confirmed by an 1801 land grant deed from his father, which provided Arter with land and livestock in Rockingham County, North Carolina—though he never claimed this inheritance. Instead, Arter settled in Russell, Scott, and Wise Counties in Virginia. His extended family was widespread, with siblings including Littleberry, Elizabeth, William, and John Jr., and nephews and nieces, such as Joseph, Charles, Pleasant, and Frances Dale. The family were often enumerated in tax and census records as Indian, Mulatto, or Free People of Color. Many of the Dales migrated to Kentucky, while others remained in Virginia and North Carolina. Tax, land, and court records link various family members over multiple generations, offering insight into their movements and legacy. This study aims to clarify the true history of Arter Dale and his extended relations, providing a foundation for further genealogical research.
